TOEFL iBT preparation
The English test preferred by many US and Canadian universities and accepted widely elsewhere.
Who takes it from Nigeria: Nigerian applicants to US and Canadian graduate and undergraduate programmes, applicants for teaching or research assistantships, and anyone whose target institution lists TOEFL first. Many also take it because it is fully computer-based.

The exam
How TOEFL iBT is structured
Around two hours, taken on a computer at a test centre or, where offered, at home. ETS has revised the test format and score reporting in 2026, so the current structure and section timings should be confirmed on the official site.
Reading
Academic passages with comprehension, vocabulary and inference questions.
Listening
Lectures and campus conversations, with note-taking allowed.
Speaking
Independent and integrated tasks recorded into a microphone, including summarising what you read and heard.
Writing
An integrated task that combines reading and listening, and an academic-discussion task.
Scoring
Each section is scored and the section scores combine into an overall result; ETS updated the reporting scale in 2026. Results are generally accepted for two years.
Exam boards revise their formats and scoring from time to time. The outline here is a general description for planning your preparation; always confirm the current structure, dates and fees on the official site before you register. Official site: ETS
